What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day

So how does one celebrate Opposable Thumbs Day? Roy recommends, “Get on your knees and give thanks that your pet doesn’t have thumbs!”

Dope for Cats

Catnip is a mystery to many people, but it’s actually a very common perennial herb that belongs to the mint family labiatae. Though catnip is native to Europe and Asia, it’s become naturalized in the U.S. and Canada and is now so widespread as to be considered a weed in parts of North America. The type of catnip that most cats like goes by the scientific name Nepeta cataria, but more than 250 other varieties of the herb exist.

For Dogs, Actions Count

As interesting as these findings were, the real message–one that stayed with me–was what came next. Upon analyzing the data, the researchers found that although some actions tended to instigate play while others resulted in silent stares, the frequency with which the owners used the signals was unrelated to their success. In other words, owners tended to use unsuccessful gestures even after they were demonstrated not to work. And there I had it, scientific proof: Dogs are smarter than humans. Well, at least in some ways. You see, dogs are champions at trial-and-error learning. They have all day to try things out and see what works.

The Cat-astrophic Cat-alyst

But then, with no warning, I felt a sudden, inexplicable urge to leave. Call it karma, coincidence, sixth sense or ESP, something told me to leave immediately. GO HOME. NOW! Unable to define the eerie sensation, but powerless to ignore it, I literally dragged Amanda to the car and sped toward our house, totally disregarding speed limits, barely pausing at red-lit intersections as that vague, but insistent feeling poured through my every fiber.

Cats hate water…right?

……SAM USED TO DRINK FROM THE FAUCET….DIDN’T LIKE IT MUCH WHEN I BATHED HIM :) !

Black Cat Balderdash

In a society driven by statistics, I am unable to provide an absolute number, but based on personal experience and reports from cat-fancying friends and acquaintances, there is a marked increase in the maiming, disappearance and even destruction of black cats this time of year. Coincidence? Perhaps. Occult rituals? Possibly, in some cultures so inclined. Cruelty? A definite probability. Stupidity, superstition and outright ignorance? Unfortunately, even in this age of enlightenment, a very real and horrible likelihood.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

It’s rare that I read novels, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. The writer has an extremely fluid writing style, and a respectable “green” sensibility that I enjoyed very much. The story is both moving and informative (in sneaky ways that aren’t preachy), and I enjoyed the leit motiv of car racing.

Feline Fantasies 101

“Hey, everybody knows that black cats bring bad luck,” he insisted, then paused to watch my complexion darken, eyebrows shooting toward my auburn hairline.” I’ve always believed they have something to do with evil, witchcraft and wizardry.

Old Dog, Good Dog

“Find new ways to connect with your dog,” Haug urges. “Teaching a trick is not only good for the dog’s brain, but it’s a fun, low-pressure way to do something that doesn’t require a lot of physical strength. The trick doesn’t need to be a back flip. They can bow, cover their eyes with their paws, flick their ears… “Grooming is another way to connect; so is hanging out on the porch or at the park.”

Does Your Cat Eat Strange Things?

As it turns out, just like humans can manifest a disorder called pica (whereby non-nutritive items like dirt and clay are eaten) so do cats. And it can be pretty common in our feline friends.
